Pet Peeves: The Lights Peeve
Good Morning (or night or afternoon, wherever you are, whenever you read this)! This post / email is for those who want something fun to read. Hope you stick until the end!
Last week, I touched on pet peeves and my pet peeve with a door. This week, I’ll talk about my pet peeves with…lights. Yes, you heard me. The lights. Crazy, right?
So what about the lights do I get annoyed about? Well, if no one’s in the room and you leave the lights on, I will get annoyed for a millisecond and shut the lights for you. It’s annoying because it happens so often. It’s annoying because the lights annoys me. Does that even make sense to the majority of light-loving people? No. I’ll explain in just a second.
Suppose you’re living with some people. There’s food, and you’re supposed to eat together like a family, and perhaps you truly are family. One of them leaves the light of their room on, and nobody notices. A few cents wasted there. Congratulations on being okay with higher electricity bills (by a few cents). This may not be a big deal, but if it happens all the time, I bet it’ll compound over time. So maybe it’s the financial bit that ticks me off…sometimes. If there’s a legit reason for the lights being left on (like growing plants under a glow-light), go right ahead. But you know what? Once upon a time, when I lived with my siblings and parents, I had a sibling who was scared of the dark. So what did they do? They woke up in the middle of the night for the washroom, then left the lights on for me to discover when I woke up in the middle of the night for similar reasons. And the crazy part? The washroom was three steps from our room. Annoyed? Definitely.
I don’t understand my sibling who is scared of the dark. They had a light on when sleeping, and I had to deal with it. Similarly, I don’t understand my mother who scolded me for doing things ‘in the dark’. Sure, I did get lazy sometimes, and maybe I had a bit of ADHD and obsessed over things for too long, but I don’t see leaving the lights off when the sun shone into the room until it didn’t (because it was late) too big a deal. I like the dark, until my mind becomes paranoid for no reason. I do get why someone might like the light more than the dark, but is that really a reason to turn on the lights when the sun is shining so brightly, you don’t even need to flick on the lights? Of course not. Allow the sun to give it its blessing. Please do not underestimate the power of the sun. It can blind you. You can either use it to your advantage or complain about its existence.
Of course, I still do things in the semi-darkness. I read sometimes in the semi-darkness (which is apparently bad for your eyes), and I wake up and drink water in the darkness. What’s the big deal? At least I don’t use devices in the dark now.
So yes, the lights that are turned on for absolutely no reason triggers me, and perhaps there is absolutely no real reason it does, but it’s still one of my pet peeves. Maybe it doesn’t bother you, and maybe it didn’t bother you until I pointed it out. Either way, at least, in this day and age, flicking the lights off can save a little bit of money, and perhaps contribute to the overall health of the planet. Oh, and please do not make me talk about schools and other such places where they leave the damned lights on 24/7.
Thanks for sticking this long, and I hope you have a great week! 😁
I want some feedback: Do you like these topics? Anything else you want to send me is much appreciated.
