Let's Talk: Crocheting
Good Morning (or night or afternoon, wherever you are, whenever you read this)! This post / email is for those who want something fun to read. Hope you stick until the end!
Crocheting is a hobby of mine that I find fun at times, and other times, tedious. This week, I’ll be talking about such a craft.
It all started…well, let’s go back to what lead to my starting crocheting, knitting. I have no ill will against knitting—-the stitches are very beautiful. At this point, though, I have forgotten how to knit. My mother attempted to teach us how to knit a couple of times in my childhood (obviously failing when no one took it up). In my junior year, I ended up being interested in knitting. I knit a (little bit too small) scarf, and the rest is history. I joined the knitting club at my school, and ended up knitting, well, 5 squares (we were making blankets as a club) before deciding that it was extremely inefficient. So I started crocheting my squares. Which is what started my crocheting hobby.
It was far more efficient to crochet squares, especially for an amateur knitter like me. I had no idea how to control the tension, and it took way too long for me to knit. Outside of club activities, I made a couple of baskets (very easy) and trivets (or hot pad…or whatever it is, or something like that). This is perhaps what compelled me to take crocheting up as a hobby. I found early on that knitting, crocheting, and stitching can all be utilized in a single project, which is pretty cool, but I have no clue how to stitch so 😅.
With crocheting, you can make a lot of interesting things, and (though they may look a bit ugly at times) it can be a hobby that can decorate your home. Like a lot of other hobbies, learning how to crochet can encourage you to learn things outside of crocheting. For example, if you go really deep into crocheting (which I have not), you might learn the different kinds of yarn (from different sources) and which type to use for certain projects. You may also notice, when (and if) you decide to buy your clothes, that certain clothes made out of certain types of fabric / yarn need certain treatments (such as, don’t put it into a dryer). So, even if it isn’t crocheting, hobbies can be a great learning experiment.
For me, though, I do not readily improve my crocheting skills nor knowledge, which is perhaps why I still have yet to do anything new. If anyone is more experienced and wish to recommend me any projects to take on, I’ll appreciate it 😄.
Crocheting (or knitting) can be pretty inexpensive. Or…not. I mean, you can buy knitting needles for… (wait a second. Lemme search it up) $10, crochet hooks for less than $10 and yarn for less than $5. I mean, that’s probably the minimum starting cost, and you’ll need to keep supplying yourself with yarn throughout the projects you take on. Though this may be too much for some people, I believe, if you like it, it’ll be a fun hobby for you. If you want to try it, I would bet you know at least one person who has the tools to start knitting (or crocheting), so you can ask them if you could try it out before actually buying things. Also, the learning curve for beginners is pretty small (for both knitting and crocheting, but especially crocheting), so even if it turns out that it isn’t your thing, at least you have learned something new 🙂. There’s a ton of resources out there for you to learn from and, if you want to give a friend something as a gift, this can be something (amigurumi?).
If you have some free time, I recommend taking up a hobby—-any hobby. For me, that just so happened to be crocheting (among other things). Also, to be completely honest, I watch random videos while crocheting, so I suppose that’s another incentive to take up crocheting (or knitting)—-you can crochet (or knit) while watching something. I know from my visual arts class back in high school that some kids watched shows while painting, and you can possibly do something crafty while doing something else too (though I’m not exactly encouraging multitasking. I mean, what else are you gonna do, right?), if you want some inspiration for a hobby.
Thanks for sticking this long, and I hope you have a great week! 😁
I want some feedback: Do you like these topics? Anything else you want to send me is much appreciated.
